I have had the fortune through out Amava's entire life of getting gear with a subdued appearance. I've never actively chosen gear based on its appearance, but I really do favor low-key appearances, and purple/red colors from a RP perspective. Amava's whole schtick is that she looks like this bouncy little whimsical cutie pie who everybody dismisses based purely on superficial appearances. She loves nothing more than to hear some jerk say "awww, how cute. why don't you go put that 375 cooking skill to some use, tuts" and then turn all Jennifer Grey in Red Dawn and flip out and turn giant and red and tear the flesh right off their bones. All while looking purple and cute (well, once the red wears off).
Then I run Botanica.....and win a pair of shoulder pads that would make Dorothy from Golden Girls jealous....
